Star Wars Miniatures Masters Of The Force Review

It's said that all good things must come to an end and the short lived, but fantastic, Star Wars Miniatures is one such thing. Masters of the Force is the final expansion for the Star Wars Miniatures game published by Wizards of the Coast as they have not chosen to renew their licensing agreement. Even though it's the last expansion for Star Wars it is still a high quality released filled with powerful force wielding foes and the incredibly huge Dejarik Bruisers.

The Masters of the Force booster packs focus on a selection of hand picked force wielders such as Darth Vader, Yoda, and Mace Windu. The super rares of this set are:

Cay Qel-Droma
Freedon Nadd
Voolvif Monn
Yoda, Force Spirit
Arden Lyn
Ganner Rhysode
Grevious, Kaleesh Warlord

This expansion also features all 8 Dejarik creatures as seen in the holodeck game in Star Wars: Episode IV. They are massive figures with incredible details though their usefulness in-game is yet to be seen. They are all part of the Fringe faction. The other factions featured in this expansion with various levels of participation are the Old Republic, the Sith, the Republic, the Separatists, the Rebels, the Imperials, the New Republic, the already mentioned Fringe, the Yuuzhan Vong, and the Mandalorians (phew!).

The Dejarik figures are huge and detailed and are definitely a cool addition to the Star Wars Miniature game universe. In my 3 booster packs I somehow managed to get 6 of the 8 bruisers. They all have pretty silly alien names like Ghhhk and Houjix and are each melee attackers.

Master Windu

First up we've got Mace Windu, aka Master Windu, aka Samuel L. Jackson. He's a force-wielding badass who isn't afraid to sport a purple lightsaber. If you have a problem with that I'm sure he'd be more then willing to settle it with you. He fights with the Vaapad-Style, or ferocity form, the 7th of the 7 lightsaber fighting styles as recognized by the last Jedi Council of the Old Jedi Order. With it Master Windu is granted a triple strike and critical hits on natural rolls of 18, 19, and 20 making him an absolutely destructive force on the battlefield. As if 3 attacks weren't enough he gets to counter attack when attacked and can target an enemey for the duration of the battle with his ability Shatterpoint. Shatterpoint makes every first attack of each round a natural 20. He also has a force repulse which causes 30 damage and forces back enemies. For all this power he does cost 65 points. Still, this one man army could turn the tides of nearly any battle.

Anakin Skywalker, Force Spirit

Next is a staple in the Star Wars universe and in the Star Wars Miniature game; Anakin Skywalker, aka young Darth Vader, aka "your father." This rebel is a very interesting character that really isn't a character at all. With his ability Light Spirit he is an apparition on the battlefield and cannot directly influence the battle in any way. Indirectly is another matter. At the beginning of the game the player chooses another force-user to target and that character gets mettle and force renewal 1 while Anakin is within 4 squares. Other allies get mettle within 6 squares of Anakin making him a userful addition to any squad for a mere 12 points. While he can't be directly attacked he is able to be targeted by enemy force wielders and can be killed with 1 force point and a failed save of 11. There is also Yoda, Force Spirit; who acts as a little green force battery.

Molator

No review of the Masters of the Force booster packs would be complete without a nice mention of the Dejarik creatures. Molator is one such creature who appears as an elephant ant monster with long 3 toed arms. Apparently Molator is a pretty swell guy to know as he protects his own kind with a protective aura. While he is a melee only character his long arms gives him a reach of 2 squares which, combined with his cunning attack, means he can dish out 30 damage per attack. At 22 points he wouldn't be a bad addition to a Dejarik squad.

Ewok Warrior

Finally we have about as opposite as you can get to the Dejarik sluggers; the Ewok Warrior. This common fringe faction stands around an inch tall and pales in comparison with the Dejariks. Each one costs a paltry 5 points and with only 10 hit points they go down easy. Why would a player choose them then? Who knows, but growing up they were my favorite part of Star Wars. Only time will tell if they are simply a filler unit.

Star Wars Masters of the Force Booster Pack Review Round-up

It's sad that the last expansion for a great game is so solid and well thought out. Many fans and players are hoping that some other company takes up the reigns for the miniatures game but to find one that would do it with such care and style as Wizards of the Coast would be tough. Let's hope that the galactic battles of good and evil continue to reverberate across the galaxy far far away...

Star Wars Miniatures The Dark Times Review

Hot off the press (molds?) is The Dark Times Expansion for Star Wars Miniatures which is set to be released on January 26th 2010. The expansion takes place between Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars IV: A New Hope and is set in a dark and troubled time for the galaxy. The Jedi, protectors of the Old Republic, have lost control and evil forces now run rampant. There are a total of 40 new characters to collect and The Dark Times Booster Packs sell for around $15 each and come with 7 fully assembled figures and their stat cards.

The Dark Times Unit's

This Star Wars Miniature Expansion contains characters from many different factions like the Rebels, the Mandalorians, the Sith, the Empire, and the ubiquitous Fringe faction. The Old Republic, Sith, Separatist and Mandalorians are least represented with only one character each (Jedi Watchman, Elite Sith Assassin, Jedi Hunter Droid, and Mandalorian Jedi Hunter respectively). The Fringe faction is well fleshed out with 17 figures - the rares and very rares being: Bomo Greenbark, Bossk, Trandoshan Hunter, Boushh, Ubese Hunter, Dengar, Hired Kille, 4-Lom, Droid Mercenary, IG-88, Assassin Droid and Zuckuss, Bounty Hunter. Commas also seem to be flesh out in this set as well. The Empire gets Major Maximilian Veers and Kir Kanos. The Rebels get Chewbacca, Fearless Scout, Das Jennir, Ferus Olin, and Jax Pavan. Finally rounding out the Republic is A'Sharad Hett, K'Kruhk, Jedi Master, and Merumeru.

As always Wizards of the Coast does a fine job of presentation with their products. Paint and build quality are good to great and many of the figures come with "splints" to help protect the finer details like lightsabers and pole weapons. The two human engineers didn't fare so well, like the treadwell droid in the Galaxy At War Expansion, were found sleeping on the job in a somewhat reclined position. The rubber/plastic material of the figures means that the damage is not permanent and with some gratuitous coffee (Engineers don't work without coffee - union rules) woke back up and assumed an upright position.

Luckily, we here at Toy Titan got our paws on three pre-release packs. The mix of units in our Dark Times Booster packs isn't indicative of what you'll get so don't complain!

Zuckuss, Bounty Hunter

This wily Gand known for his force sensing and master findsman training tools around with the protocol droid 4-LOM. This unit is a rare and is only for Mr. Zuckuss himself. (4-LOM is found in Rebel Storm and the Bounty Hunters expansions). This bounty hunter is forced up with both anticipation and force sense. He has rapport with 4-LOM, reducing the cost of the droid when in the same squad. He fires a snare rifle with accurate shot and gets bonuses to fighting other uniques.

Dengar, Hired Killer

I got 2 Dengars as my rares in my other 2 packs - a little disappointing but with the random nature of boosters this sometimes happens. He is a bounty hunter with the final shot special ability, making him the go-to guy for wiping up the remains of wounded units. He can do up to 50! damage to characters who are low on health. He also gets a bonus to attacking unique characters, being the skilled bounty hunter that he is. Use him as an artillery piece in the back ranks for the most effective use of his abilities. Help him get his revenge on Han Solo for what he did to him during the pod races!

Imperial Sovereign Protector

This imperial red guard unit is striking with its red cloak and punishing pole weapon. The protectors are chosen for their brutal fighting and are trained in rudimentary dark side force use. They match up especially well with Emperor Palpatine and, if adjacent, will soak up the damage meant for Darth Sidious himself. He does cost a bit at 25 points, making it tough to have too many in a squad, but with enough care, they can be used to a devastating effect.

Talz Warrior

Finally, we have a Talz Warrior, chosen not so much for his abilities, but for the detail of the unit itself. Though he is still a 1 square unit he towers over the others wielding a large club and a stick. This character is so tough that he brings a stick to a lightsaber fight!

Star Wars Miniatures Galaxy At War Review

Galaxy At War is the newest expansion for both The Star Wars Miniatures and Star Wars Role Playing Game by Wizards of the Coast. It was released in late October of 2009. The following review is based on the sampling from 3 booster packs from the expansion. Booster packs retail for around $15 and contain 7 painted, fully assembled figures, and their associated game stat cards.

The Galaxy At War Expansion Factions

The Galaxy At War expansion focuses on 2 main factions plus the ever-prevalent fringe faction. The Separatists are defined by battle droids and magnaguards in addition to such notable figures as General Whorm Loathsom, Captain Mar Tuuk and Wat Tambor. The Republic fills their ranks with clone troopers, commanders, commandos, and vehicle drivers. Admiral Yularen, Captain Argyus, and Nahdar Vebb are just some of the famous individuals belonging to the Republic that are featured in this set. Finally, the smattering of Fringe faction characters; a Rodian, a Weequay Pirate, an Aqualish Technician, and Utility Droids help to flesh out the set. Cad Bane and Hondo Ohkama are the two best known figures belonging to the Fringe faction.

Physical Product Review

Each unit is individually wrapped in a little heat sealed bag and all the game stat cards are sealed in their own plastic bag with a tiny spot of tape. It's notable that some of the more detailed units come with additional protective packaging. General Skywalker had a tiny clear plastic "splint" protecting his light saber and light sabering elbow (light saber elbow is a common Jedi injury), the giant LR-57 Combat Droid was wrapped in cardboard, and the battle droids were riding a little cardboard "pony" to protect their thinly detailed legs.

Paint and build quality is good to excellent, especially considering some of the fine detailing and general size of the figures. The Rhodian Trader and Treadwell Droid didn't fare so well in the packaging and were stuck in a bent over position. The figures soft rubber/plastic material means that no permanent damage was done to the two figures and with time they should end up back in their normal position. Of special note is General Skywalker's lightsaber and Commander Rex's jump jet cloud plume as both are made from a translucent material and really makes the units look sharp. Each figure stands around 1.5" tall and includes a black rubber/plastic base. Each base has the set symbol, the set number, the unit's faction name, the cost, the unit's name, a rarity symbol, and some additional lawyer speak stamped on the underside.

Galaxy At War Booster Pack Breakdown

Each pack is composed of 4 commons, 2 uncommons, and a single rare or very rare unit. Of my 3 booster packs I got 2 rares and a very rare. The rare/very rare units tend to be notable individuals from the Star Wars Universe and also from the Clone Wars animated television show. They have commander abilities which effects either nearby units or units of a specific type. Please bear in mind that this is the contents from my 3 booster packs and this particular mix of units may not be in your booster pack.

Hondo Ohnaka

Hondo Ohnaka is a very rare piece and is best described as a Fringe faction sniper pirate who has the ability to give other pirates greater shooting accuracy. His mix of abilities require careful planning to make the most of, but can be devastating if pulled off correctly.

General Skywalker

The rare General Skywalker is a Republic faction, force using (my only force user from the booster packs), lightsaberwielding, and all around badass. He wields his lightsaber in the Djem So style, which is a attack-and-be-counterattacked style and also excels at using his Jedi blade defensively. He gives units around him faster movement making his a very versatile unit to build a squad around.

Captain Rex, 501st Commander

The Republic's rare Captain Rex, 501st Commander is a jump jet wearing, double attacking, Order 66 commander who inspires others to be as mobile as he is. His figure is especially cool as he is supported not by his legs, but by a translucent plume of smoke emanating from his jet pack. Because he hits hard with his attacks, dealing 30 damage, and moves around the board quickly, he is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

LR-57 Combat Droid

The last unit I wanted to highlight (how could I not!) is the massive uncommon LR-57 Combat Droid that belongs to the Separatist faction. It towers nearly double the height of other units and takes up 4 squares on the battlefield. This character can attack 4 times per turn AND move so long as it's firing upon an unactivated unit. It's interesting that, although this unit is huge, it can ambush.

Star Wars Roleplaying Game Galaxy At War Supplemental Rule Book

One major advantage that the Star Wars Miniature game has going for it is its close association with the Star Wars roleplaying game. The miniatures and battle maps can double as set pieces for a realistic table top role playing experience. This double value helps to offset the initial investment cost in the both gaming systems. The Galaxy At War supplemental rule book contains enough new races, equipment, talents, feats, vehicles, settings, bases and battlestations to make any campaign into a full fledged galactic war.

The Star Wars franchise is a long running, and well loved piece of American pop culture. It's universe spans numerous movies, books, games, and spin-offs that sometimes fails to hit their mark. Fortunately, Wizards of the Coast, in their grand gaming tradition, was able to produce an expansion fitting of the Star Wars name.

Star Wars Mini Galaxy At War Overview
