What Are Neopets?
Neopets are the brain-child of Adam Powell and Donna Williams. This pair created an interactive virtual network in November of 1999. Since conception the Neopet craze has grown from a little known RPG aimed at a young audience to a buzz-word; Neopets how have over 70 million users, young and old alike. In June 2005, Viacom bought Neopets INC for $160 million, and are now flooding the market with Neopet console games, which are available on hand helds as well as PC. In 2005 McDonald's jumped on the Neopet craze, distributing Neopet plush toys. Do not feel guilty if you are an adult and you are hooked to Neopets - you are not alone.

In 1997, Tiger Toys introduced the first virtual pets, if you do not take into account the pet rock, which was bound to fail, Giga Pets are an operator friendly virtual pet, on a key chain: there is only 3 buttons, and not many ways to interact with the Giga Pet. Neopets are the next step in evolution for the virtual pet. Neopets are not just Giga Pets lost in virtual reality, but a P2P community.
Neopets live in Neopia, a virtual reality. In Neopia one does not just sustain the life of a virtual pet, it is possible to interact with other users. You may battle your pet, in one of the many interactive games, these games range from classic arcade games to multiplayer first-person shooters. There is also a hint of reality in this virtual reality; Neopia possesses a virtual economy, one is awarded Neopian money through playing one of the 160 games. which are available, and though you can not pay off your mortgage with Neopian currency, there is a wide variety of items for sale, such as clothing and a gothic piano. There are even several economist who have done studies of supply and demand in Neopia.
Neopia has weather patterns. Each player has to purchase warm clothing for their Neopet. Weather in Neopia is measured in Celsius, but can be converted into Fahrenheit. Neopia is divided into several hamlets, each possessing a different weather pattern: it is cold at the poles and warm at the equator, unless your Neopet visits Faerieland, a city in the clouds, 10,000 feet above Neopia.
In general, Neopets are a fun addition to the world of virtual gaming, for the young and old.
